President Donald Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the National Prayer Service held at Washington National Cathedral on Tuesday, dismissing it as unremarkable after Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde delivered a plea for mercy for those “scared” about life under his administration.

When asked by reporters about the service upon returning to the Oval Office, Trump quipped, “What did you think? Did you like it? Did you find it exciting? Not too exciting, was it?” He added, “I didn’t think it was a good service. They could do much better.”

Trump’s comments, captured in a pool report cited by Huffington Post reporter Jen Bendery, came after a service traditionally marked by solemnity and spiritual reflection rather than the excitement of political rallies or entertainment events. Some observers noted that Trump appeared to doze off during parts of the service, fueling further criticism.

Bishop Budde’s remarks during the service included a pointed call for humility and unity, which some interpreted as a subtle critique of Trump’s leadership style. “Perhaps we are most dangerous to ourselves and others when we are persuaded without a doubt that we are absolutely right, and someone else is absolutely wrong,” Budde said. “Because then we are a few steps from labeling ourselves as the good people versus the bad people.”

Throughout the service, Trump sat slumped in his seat while 12 religious leaders shared messages of hope and the choir performed. During Budde’s plea for mercy, in which she highlighted the fears of immigrants and LGBTQ youth, Vice President J.D. Vance appeared visibly irritated, at one point leaning over to whisper something to his wife.

A moment that drew particular attention was when Trump and others in the group appeared to laugh during a prayer for “the vulnerable,” an act that many criticized as insensitive.

Religious services following presidential inaugurations often aim to foster national unity, yet this year’s event underscored sharp divisions. Trump’s remarks and his demeanor during the service have drawn backlash, with critics pointing to a perceived lack of empathy and respect for the occasion’s solemnity.

The National Prayer Service has traditionally been an opportunity for presidents to demonstrate humility and faith, but Trump’s reaction suggested he viewed it through a different lens—one where excitement seemed to outweigh reflection.
