Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) received unexpected support from a Trump-aligned attorney after former “border czar” Tom Homan threatened to investigate her for allegedly obstructing law enforcement. Homan, a vocal critic of Ocasio-Cortez, reiterated his call for the Department of Justice (DOJ) to probe her recent live webinar titled “Know Your Rights With ICE,” which advised migrants on how to handle encounters with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

During an appearance on CNN, Homan questioned whether Ocasio-Cortez’s actions crossed legal boundaries. “I asked the Department of Justice, where is that line on impediment, right? It’s a broad statute,” Homan told host Dana Bash. “Because you can call it ‘Know Your Rights’ all you want. We all know what the bottom line is. The bottom line is, how do they evade law enforcement?”

However, Jonathan Turley, a conservative attorney and frequent Trump supporter, came to Ocasio-Cortez’s defense, calling Homan’s threats an attack on free speech. “Border Czar Tom Homan doubled down last night that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) might be prosecuted for hosting a forum on ‘Know Your Rights’ for accused illegal aliens. Such a prosecution would be an assault on free speech rights,” Turley wrote on social media.

Despite his defense, Turley took a jab at Ocasio-Cortez, accusing her of inconsistent support for free speech. “While AOC has never been a defender of free speech, principle demands something more from the rest of us who value the First Amendment,” he added, referencing Vice President J.D. Vance’s recent speech at the Munich Security Council.

Vance had criticized Germany’s censorship policies and urged the government to engage with far-right political parties, a stance that drew backlash from critics like Rep. Laura Gillen (D-NY), who accused Vance of “embracing a group that flirts with Nazism.” Ocasio-Cortez fired back at Homan’s threats with a sharp retort on social media: “Maybe he can learn to read. The Constitution would be a good place to start.”

The clash highlights the ongoing debate over free speech and immigration enforcement, with Ocasio-Cortez’s webinar drawing both criticism and unexpected support across the political spectrum. Turley’s defense underscores the broader principle of protecting First Amendment rights, even for those with opposing views.
