Anthony Scaramucci, known as “The Mooch” from his brief but memorable stint as White House communications director, made headlines again by endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris, whom he sees as the best choice for America in 2024. Scaramucci’s endorsement, published in Fortune, positions Harris as the candidate capable of leading the U.S. toward economic growth and inclusivity—two pillars he believes are necessary to break the nation’s cycle of ideological governance.

“She is the candidate who can break us out of the cycle of ideological governance,” wrote Scaramucci, expressing his support for Harris. “Her commonsense policies align most with economic growth and social inclusion,” he added. Scaramucci’s political evolution from a Trump supporter to one of his outspoken critics has been well-documented.

In his endorsement, he didn’t hold back in criticizing his former boss, accusing Trump of pandering to dangerous ideologies. He took particular issue with a recent rally Trump held at Madison Square Garden, calling it a “dog whistle to Charles Lindbergh’s 1939 pro-‘Americanism’ rally,” which featured American flags alongside Nazi symbols. For Scaramucci, these kinds of appeals to nationalism are more than distasteful; they are a threat to the values he believes America should uphold.

While Scaramucci supported Trump in 2016, he has since come to see Trump’s actions, particularly his handling of the pandemic and his divisive policies, as detrimental to the country. He argues that Trump showed “incompetence” during the pandemic, a situation made worse by his “nativist instincts.” In Scaramucci’s view, Trump’s failure to accept the results of the 2020 election, culminating in the January 6th insurrection, revealed dangerous flaws in his character and leadership.

“If you’re willing to overlook the blatant racism and dire warnings from more than 40 former Trump officials, including his former Vice President Mike Pence and former Chief of Staff John Kelly, because you think Trump will be better for your wallet, then I’ve got news for you: Mass deportations and tariffs are destructive to the economy,” Scaramucci wrote. He warned that Trump’s economic agenda, which includes plans for mass deportations and tariffs, is misguided and ultimately harmful to the nation.

Scaramucci criticized Trump’s economic policies as “regressive,” claiming they serve only “the wealthiest Americans” while leaving the working class burdened and the national deficit growing. He cited economic analyses indicating that Trump’s deportation plan could reduce the U.S. GDP by 7.9%, with additional tariffs shrinking it by another 1.3%. According to Scaramucci, this approach would lead to a recession worse than the 2008 financial crisis and inflict significant harm on vulnerable communities.

In contrast, Scaramucci praised Harris’s economic approach, arguing that her tax plan would benefit working-class Americans, including a 13% income boost for the bottom fifth earners. “When voters feel like they’re being left behind, they vote for change. But Harris is the change we need, not Trump,” he concluded, underscoring his belief that Harris’s policies are what the country needs to bridge economic and social divides.

Scaramucci’s endorsement represents a stark departure from his previous support of Trump, highlighting a shift among some conservatives who are now turning toward Harris as a more stable and economically beneficial choice for the nation’s future. His endorsement encapsulates a broader trend among former Trump allies distancing themselves in favor of candidates who advocate for more inclusive and sustainable growth.
