Nancy Pelosi Slams Trump’s Federal Workforce Cuts as “Worst Idea Yet”
Former House Speaker Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) sharply criticized President Donald Trump on Thursday, calling his latest efforts to slash the federal workforce his “worst idea” yet.
Speaking with MSNBC, Pelosi addressed the aggressive actions taken by Trump’s new administration to downsize key government agencies, including USAID, the FBI, and possibly even the CIA. The sweeping cuts have sparked significant concern among Democrats and intelligence officials.
A controversial “Termination” memo has already named dozens of senior FBI officials set for removal, while the Justice Department has been granted authority to cut 5,000 additional FBI employees—many of whom worked on cases related to the January 6 Capitol attack.
Adding to the turmoil, a list of CIA personnel hired during the final two years of President Joe Biden’s administration has also surfaced. According to a Wall Street Journal report from Tuesday night, these intelligence agents have been given the option to resign in exchange for eight months of pay and benefits. The move has raised alarms about national security and intelligence continuity.
Pelosi pointed to concerns raised by Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) regarding access to classified government databases. She warned that such reckless cuts could jeopardize U.S. operatives gathering intelligence overseas. Democrats, she said, are working on a multi-faceted strategy to counter Trump’s sweeping personnel changes.
“We have a three-pronged plan to fight back,” Pelosi stated, outlining efforts that include legal challenges against Trump’s executive orders, proposed legislation, and grassroots mobilization to rally public support against the administration’s policies.
However, with Republicans maintaining control of both the House and Senate, Democrats face an uphill battle in blocking Trump’s restructuring of the federal workforce.
As tensions escalate, critics argue that the cuts not only weaken federal agencies but also risk undermining national security and law enforcement efforts. Supporters of the Trump administration, however, claim the reductions are necessary to eliminate bureaucratic overreach and streamline government operations.
With Democrats preparing for legal and legislative battles, and Trump pushing forward with his controversial workforce overhaul, the conflict over the federal government’s future is set to intensify in the coming months.
