Marjorie Taylor Greene Dismisses Federal Workers as “Not Real Jobs” Amid Musk-Backed Government Purge

WASHINGTON, D.C. — During a congressional hearing on Tuesday, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) dismissed federal government employees as not having “real jobs” while defending a controversial purge of civil service workers under Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative. The sweeping overhaul has resulted in tens of thousands of layoffs, drawing protests nationwide.
“You can protest all you want outside of departments of this government, you can protest all you want, but the American people disagree with you,” Greene declared during the session. “You’re protecting the bureaucracy. The bureaucracy is not a business. Those are not real jobs producing federal revenue, by the way. They’re consuming taxpayer dollars.

Those jobs are paid for by the American tax people, who work real jobs, earn real income, pay federal taxes, and then pay these federal employees. Federal employees do not deserve their jobs. Federal employees do not deserve their paychecks. And these are jobs that can be fired at will.”
Her remarks sparked an immediate backlash, with critics pointing out that federal employees not only pay taxes but also provide essential services that support both the public and private sectors. The purge under DOGE, championed by Musk and backed by conservative lawmakers, has led to concerns about government functionality and job security.
Among those pushing back against Greene’s statements was Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-TX), who highlighted that thousands of Greene’s own constituents work for the federal government. “Marjorie Taylor Greene believes 6,008 of her constituents are unworthy of a job or a paycheck because they work for the federal government,” Escobar wrote on X. “To quote her favorite person: SAD!”
The debate over government employment comes amid scrutiny of Greene’s financial interests. Reports have surfaced that she purchased stock in Musk’s flagship electric car company while serving on a key committee overseeing the work of DOGE. This has raised ethical concerns about potential conflicts of interest, though Greene has not publicly addressed the matter.
