Top European Union diplomat Kaja Kallas pushed back against President Donald Trump’s claim that the EU was designed to “screw” the United States, calling the statement surprising and completely off-base.
Speaking on CBS’s Face the Nation, Kallas argued that the EU is, at its core, a peace project meant to prevent conflict among its member nations. “Europe is a peace project. It was created so that we wouldn’t have wars between the members of the European Union, and we haven’t had any,” she explained.
She also pointed out that when her home country joined the EU 20 years ago, it was actually the U.S. that encouraged it. “We were pushed by the Americans. They told us, ‘You will not get into NATO, but the European Union is something you should join because it’s a good project for transatlantic relations.’ So I was quite surprised to hear a comment like that,” she said.

Kallas didn’t stop there. She reinforced that Europe remains strongly behind Ukraine in its fight against Russia, emphasizing that the battle isn’t just about Ukraine’s sovereignty—it’s about the principles of international law and the balance of global power. “This fight is about the freedom of the free world. It’s about a world where might does not make right,” she said.
She also made it clear that the U.S. and its European allies have the economic strength to put an end to Russia’s war efforts if they act strategically. “We shouldn’t overestimate the power of Russia and underestimate our own power,” Kallas argued, highlighting Russia’s crumbling economy. She noted that inflation in Russia is over 20% and their national funds are nearly drained.

“They don’t have the same revenues from gas and oil that they used to fund the war machine. So actually, if we concentrate our efforts, we can apply pressure to force them to stop the war,” she added.
Her comments come just days after Trump made waves during his tense White House meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump took a harsh stance, telling Zelensky that Ukraine doesn’t “have the cards” and should focus on making peace rather than expecting continued U.S. support.
Kallas’ response makes it clear that Europe isn’t backing down—and that Trump’s skepticism about the EU’s role isn’t sitting well with its leaders.
