When the Azzam was launched back in April speculation was rife as to who was the owner, it is now revealed as Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nayan, President of the United Arab Emirates and Emir of Abu Dhabi. Sold for over €480 million, Azzam is the length of 12 double decker buses, it is the biggest and estimated to be one of the fastest with a 94,000 horsepower capable of reaching 30 knots, or 56kph. While it lays claim to being the most luxurious vessel in the world, it caters to Arab tastes with a studied austerity, with no open recreational spaces or bars.

Chelsea FC owner Roman Abramovic’s Eclipse is valued at €860 million was the biggest private yacht on the see since 2010 when it was launched. It is a more luxurious prospect than the Azzam featuring an armour-plated master suite, two swimming pools, two helipads, a hall, a cinema, a mini-submarine and even its own missile defence system. While Azzam is unlikely to leave the dock very often and is more a question of prestige, Abramovic’s Eclipse can regularly be seen moored off the coast of Monte Carlo or in the Caribbean.

Owned by the Sultan Qaboos of Oman, Al Said was the world’s second largest yacht at the time of launch. It took four years to build its interior was designed by Terence Disdale and has exterior styling by Tim Heywood Design.
