The history of this festival is very interesting and it dates back to the 16th century, the first thanksgiving dinner had taken place back then. It started when the pilgrims were stuck and they had to grow beans and other crops in order to survive. They learnt how to grow these crops from Indians and it is believed that later a dinner was held in order to celebrate it. Some people also say that it is a myth.
Today the concept of Thanksgiving is to thank God for hi mercies and also around them. People sit together, pray, eat and make joy. The weather is great in America during this festival and it also marks the start of the Christmas season. People make their families and friends and eat.
There are a lot of customs of thanksgiving such as communal prayers. Communal prayers are witnessed in churches and homes. People thank God for his mercies and also their friends and families for their good deeds. Another custom of thanksgiving is the family dinner. This festival brings families together on one table and has a delicious meal. Decorating homes is another custom which is observed on this festival people decorate their homes with fresh and dries flowers. Everyone wishes each other thanksgiving by sends cards, messages, emails and flowers.
The Thanksgiving feast is very popular and turkey is a part of it. People roast turkey as a tradition. Feast also includes ducks, geese, swans, pumpkin, berries and other delicacies. Thanksgiving is also celebrated in parts of Asia and Africa but with different names but the idea is the same to thank their Lord and fellow people.
