Hublot Creates a Timepiece Worthy of LaFerrari
While it may seem trivial to some, buyers of high-end sports cars have actually come to expect a luxury wristwatch to accompany their fancy new wheels. To that end, Bugatti has partnered with Parmigiani Fleurier, Aston Martin with Jaeger-LeCoultre, Bentley with Breitling, McLaren with TAG Heuer, Pagani with Cvstos and Koenigsegg with Quinting.
Ferrari, for its part, has collaborated with several luxury watch brands, among them Girard-Perregaux, Officine Panerai and Cabestan, to name just a few— but its current tie is to Hublot. So to celebrate the release of the new LaFerrari, the two manufacturers have released the MP-05.
A highly complex timepiece, the Hublot MP-05 LaFerrari is built around a unique barrel-based tourbillion mechanism with 637 individual components arranged around a central column. The hours and minutes are displayed in the upper right-hand corner, while the top left display the power reserve.
On that note, the MP-05 features a mind-boggling 50-day power reserve, so while it may be a manual-wind movement, charging it up is a rather infrequent ordeal. The movement is housed inside a PVD-coated titanium case with a sapphire crystal window and a rubber strap.
The watch is made to accompany the latest supercar to be released by the factory in Maranello, the company’s first hybrid vehicle that pairs a 6.3-liter V12 engine with an electric motor to produce 949 horsepower and 663 lb-ft of torque. With a Formula One-style carbon-monocoque chassis and state of the art active aerodynamics, the LaFerrari is quoted to reach 62 mph in under three seconds and top out over 205 mph.
While Ferrari will only make 499 examples of its latest flagship model, Hublot will produce just 50 examples of the timepiece designed to complement it. That means less than one in ten owners of the supercar will be able to buy the matching watch, and will have to pay another $300,000 (or thereabouts) on top of the million-dollar-plus purchase price of the car for the privilege.
