Heartbroken Dad Relives Horror as Baby Girl Dies After Being Hit by Driver

Rob Hall sat on a bench outside a children’s hospital in Bristol, his world crumbling around him. Moments earlier, he had made a final FaceTime call to his mother, who lay dying in a hospital bed in Haverfordwest. He didn’t tell her the truth—that just hours before, his baby daughter, Mabli, had been critically injured in a horrific crash.

Eight-month-old Mabli had been strapped into her pushchair outside Withybush Hospital when a white BMW suddenly accelerated off the road, striking Rob, his brother, and the stroller. The once peaceful summer day turned into a nightmare.

“All of a sudden, I heard this horrible revving and screeching,” Rob recalled. “The next thing I see is this white car, airborne. I was hit and thrown into a parking bay. I was on my hands and knees, and the first thing I saw was the pram underneath the car.”

Moments later, he saw something that will haunt him forever. “The next thing I remember is somebody walking past me holding Mabli’s lifeless body. I’ll never be able to explain what that felt like.” Mabli was airlifted to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff, but her parents were not allowed to travel with her, told Wales Online.

They made the 100-mile journey in a police car, arriving hours later only to be told they couldn’t see their daughter immediately. Hours stretched into agony as doctors prepared them for the worst. “At about 3 a.m., a doctor came in and sat down. He said that it was very unlikely that she was going to survive,” Rob said.

“As soon as I was told, I just went sick everywhere. It was the most horrific thing you could ever hear in your life.” Meanwhile, Rob’s mother passed away in Withybush Hospital. In a cruel twist of fate, he was mourning her death while watching his daughter slip away.

Two days later, doctors told Rob and Gwen it was time to end Mabli’s life support. In one final act of love, they pleaded to wait until midnight so that Mabli’s cousin, who was being born that same day, would not forever share the anniversary of her death.

At 12:30 a.m. on June 25, baby Mabli passed away in her parents’ arms. Last month, 71-year-old Bridget Curtis, the driver of the BMW, was sentenced to four years in prison for causing Mabli’s death by dangerous driving.

Though justice has been served, Rob and Gwen say nothing will ever ease their grief. “We are still in hell,” Rob admitted. “We are in survival mode every single day. We are all lost without Mabli.”
