Mother Arrested for Attempted Murder After Allegedly Shooting 13-Year-Old Daughter During Domestic Dispute
SEAT PLEASANT, Md. – A 13-year-old girl is in critical condition after being shot in the neck, allegedly by her own mother during a heated domestic dispute on Monday evening. The incident occurred at a residence near the Seat Pleasant Police Department in Prince George’s County, Maryland.
Authorities arrested 32-year-old Talecka Brown, charging her with first-degree attempted murder after surveillance footage and further investigation pointed to her involvement in the shooting.
Police were called to the scene on 69th Place, where they found the young girl near the front door with a gunshot wound. Initially, the girl claimed her mother instructed her to say that someone else had shot her. However, investigators quickly uncovered the truth.
Surveillance video captured the teen walking home from school, retrieving a trash can from the curb, and entering the house. According to court documents, no one else was seen entering or exiting the home between the time the girl entered and the shot was fired.
The girl later told investigators that she and her mother had been arguing when the altercation escalated. As she walked down the stairs, she noticed her mother holding a gun. Moments later, a single gunshot was fired, causing her to fall to the bottom of the stairs, told Fox5dc.
“It is always tragic when we have acts of violence within our community, but it is heart-wrenching when the perpetrator is supposed to be your protector,” said the Acting Police Chief of Seat Pleasant in a statement.
Neighbor Tina Niblack, who witnessed Brown’s arrest, expressed her shock and sadness. “It’s disheartening that too much of this is happening today,” she said. “Domestic violence in any form, even within your own home, is still domestic violence.”
The young girl is currently receiving treatment in the hospital, where she is expected to undergo further surgery as her condition stabilizes. A loaded black Glock handgun was recovered from the home during a search.
Talecka Brown remains in custody and is scheduled for a bond hearing tomorrow at 1:15 p.m., as the community grapples with the shocking incident of domestic violence.
