Legal Battle Unfolds Between Wendy Williams and Ex-Husband Kevin Hunter
Wendy Williams’ guardian, Sabrina Morrissey, has taken legal action against the former talk show host’s ex-husband, Kevin Hunter, alleging that he was “unjustly enriched” following their divorce. In a recent court filing, Morrissey has demanded that Hunter return the sum of $112,000, which she claims he was “overpaid” after the dissolution of their marriage.
Additionally, she is seeking reimbursement for the interest accrued on the overpayment and is requesting a gag order to prevent Hunter from discussing the matter publicly. According to reports from The Sun, Morrissey contends that Hunter received an excessive severance payment after the divorce, which was not in accordance with the terms of their settlement agreement.
The agreement stipulated that Hunter’s payments would cease if Wendy Williams’ income fell below a certain threshold. However, despite Williams no longer receiving payments from “The Wendy Williams Show” after October 2021, Hunter continued to receive payments until January 2022.
Morrissey alleges that this continued payment to Hunter was the result of an automatic payment arrangement set up within Williams’ bank account. She argues that this arrangement contradicted the terms of their settlement agreement and constituted unjust enrichment on Hunter’s part. In her court filing, Morrissey asserts that Hunter’s retention of the overpaid funds constitutes interference with Williams’ rightful possession of those funds.
Furthermore, Morrissey is seeking a gag order to prevent Hunter from speaking to the press or discussing the matter with others. She argues that such actions could cause harm to Williams, particularly given Hunter’s history of engaging with the media on personal matters.
According to Page Six, The legal dispute between Williams and Hunter has been ongoing since their divorce was finalized in January 2020. The split was initiated by Williams in 2019 following reports of Hunter’s infidelity and the birth of a child with his mistress. As part of the divorce settlement, Hunter received a lump sum payment from Williams, along with a severance payment.
“I request that the Court increase the protection of this case and issue a ‘gag order’ thereby instructing Mr. Hunter not to speak to the press or others, except for legal advisors, about these matters and to instruct anyone with whom he has previously discussed these matters that they should not communicate about these matters with anyone else,” the filing read.
Hunter has also filed court documents of his own, demanding that Williams resume making severance payments to him, as per their settlement agreement. He claims that the cessation of these payments has caused him financial hardship.
Meanwhile, Williams has been grappling with health issues, including a diagnosis of frontotemporal lobe dementia and aphasia in May 2023, stemming from her prolonged struggles with substance and alcohol abuse. She has retreated from the public eye, prompting scrutiny over her portrayal in a documentary produced by A+E Networks titled “Where Is Wendy Williams?”
In previous court filings, Morrissey has criticized the documentary, alleging that it exploits Williams’ vulnerable state and portrays her in a demeaning light. She contends that the documentary fails to accurately depict Williams’ medical condition and unfairly suggests that her behavior is the result of substance abuse.
The legal battles surrounding Williams’ personal and financial affairs continue to unfold, shedding light on the complexities of celebrity divorces and the challenges faced by individuals navigating health issues in the public eye. As the proceedings progress, the outcomes of these legal disputes will undoubtedly have far-reaching implications for all parties involved.
