Tom Selleck Was Accused Of Stealing 1.4 Million Gallons Of Water For His Avocado Farm
Celebrities have become involved in a number of controversies. It may have been something they said or wrote in an interview, or it could have been something they did that was wrong or cruel.
During a drought, Tom Selleck was accused of diverting 1.4 million gallons of water for his 20-acre avocado farm. The Calleguas Municipal Water District in Ventura County filed a lawsuit against Selleck for having stolen water.
Apparently, a tanker truck was used to take the water from a public hydrant. The water was then delivered to Selleck’s avocado farm, which is located in a different district.
It seems the tanker truck went to a public hydrant to be filled at least a dozen times in two years. According to the BBC, the lawsuit happened during a drought. “The legal case came after California communities were ordered to cut water usage by 25% amid a four-year drought that has damaged the state’s agricultural industry.”
The water authority even hired a real private investigator to keep an eye on the alleged water theft involving the previous fictitious P.I.’s farm. The private investigator seemed to have watched the water being taken.
The investigator “several times observed the same water tender leave the ranch” that Selleck owns in Ventura County, according to NBC News. According to reports, the private investigator reportedly saw tanker trucks being filled at a public hydrant before returning to Selleck’s ranch.
Selleck was apparently taking water from a different district than the one in which his ranch is located. It appears that he was utilizing resources that others required rather than ones that were already available to him in his own district.
In a different NBC News report, Thomas Slosson, the acting board president of the Calleguas Water District stated, “We believe those we represent fully expect we should take action to protect and preserve our water supplies. And we did.”
In July 2015, Tom Selleck paid over $21,000 in order to settle the lawsuit with the district.
