Daryl Hannah made a bold statement at the Oscars, showing her support for Ukraine just days after President Donald Trump’s tense and highly criticized meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
While taking the stage to present the award for Best Editing, the Kill Bill and Blade Runner star went off script and loudly declared “Slava Ukraini!”—a Ukrainian national salute that translates to “Glory to Ukraine” and has become a rallying cry for the country’s armed forces.

Her words came at a time when tensions surrounding Russia’s war on Ukraine are running high, especially after Trump’s recent Oval Office meeting with Zelensky. What was supposed to be a diplomatic discussion turned into a shocking confrontation, with both Trump and Vice President JD Vance publicly berating the Ukrainian leader in front of reporters.
During the meeting, Trump reportedly pushed for a peace deal that leaned in favor of Russia, a move that Zelensky strongly resisted. The Ukrainian president pushed back on multiple points, leading to an uncomfortable exchange that ultimately resulted in his visit being cut short.
The fallout from that meeting has rippled through Washington and Europe, sparking concerns about U.S. support for Ukraine moving forward. While Trump’s stance has been criticized by many Western leaders, Hannah’s Oscars moment was seen as a public show of solidarity for Ukraine on one of Hollywood’s biggest nights.

As the applause rang out after her statement, it was clear her words resonated with many in the audience, further highlighting the growing divide between U.S. leadership and those who continue to support Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty.
