“I’m Glad I Never Had Children with Him”: Brooke Shields breaks silence on her complex marriage to Andre Agassi
Brooke Shields has opened up about her first marriage to tennis star Andre Agassi, revealing her relief that they never had children together. In her newly released memoir, Brooke Shields Is Not Allowed To Get Old, the 59-year-old model and actress delves into her tumultuous relationship with Agassi, describing their marriage as “controlling and rigid.”
“I’m glad I never got pregnant with my first husband because it would have been a disaster,” Brooke wrote. Recalling their divorce, she revealed Agassi’s candid remark: “‘Be thankful we didn’t have children,’ he told me. ‘Because I would not have made this easy for you.’ Well, thank you for that tidbit, I thought,” she added to Us Weekly.
The Blue Lagoon star also shared how Agassi’s behavior affected her self-esteem, particularly his comments about her body. “I was very specifically told I was not runway worthy because I wasn’t skinny enough,” Brooke recounted.
“Being told you are ‘the face,’ you begin to believe that’s all you are — a face. From the neck up, I was Brooke Shields, but it was like my body existed in a different reality,” she explained. Shields and Agassi were married from 1997 to 1999, a period she now reflects on with a mix of clarity and relief.
While their relationship was brief, the actress’s candid revelations in her memoir shed light on the challenges she faced during that time, both personally and professionally.
Shields’s memoir offers a deeper understanding of her journey through fame, relationships, and self-discovery, with her first marriage serving as a cautionary tale of emotional resilience and growth.
