A tense exchange unfolded in a congressional hearing on Wednesday when Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) accused Rep. Melanie Stansbury (D-NM) of making “threats” against President Donald Trump after the Democrat vowed to resist his policies.

The confrontation took place during a Delivering on Government Efficiency (DOGE) subcommittee hearing focused on USAID, where Stansbury, the ranking Democrat, voiced frustration over Republican criticisms of her party’s handling of foreign aid.

“Wild and sloppy is not what’s happening in this committee, but what Elon Musk and Donald Trump are doing to our foreign affairs and foreign aid,” Stansbury declared. She went on to accuse Republicans of privately expressing concerns about Trump’s leadership while publicly supporting his agenda.

“We know that behind closed doors, you are calling the president, and you are calling secretaries and telling them that your constituents are upset and that you don’t support what they’re doing,” she said. The New Mexico lawmaker also criticized Musk’s financial assessments related to government spending.

“Talk about wild and sloppy,” she added. “Our friends across the aisle like to talk about how he’s some sort of genius. And this dude couldn’t even post a simple spreadsheet that adds up.” “He’s literally off by tens of billions of dollars. You guys, that’s wild.”

In a passionate closing statement, Stansbury pledged to challenge what she called unnecessary and illegal government cuts. “We are fighting for you,” she said. “We are in the courts. We are in Congress. We are in our communities, and we will hold this administration accountable. And we will not abandon our allies or our humanity.”

“So with that, I say to all of you, be strong,” she concluded. “We will fight back.” As applause broke out in the room, Greene, the chair of the subcommittee, forcefully banged her gavel, demanding silence. “I now recognize myself for closing remarks, and threats against the President of the United States will not be tolerated by anyone!” Greene exclaimed.

She also defended Musk’s financial data, despite Stansbury’s critique. “And the math does add up,” Greene insisted. “There’s plenty of spreadsheets that show that.” The heated exchange underscored the deep partisan divide over Trump’s policies, with Democrats vowing resistance and Republicans doubling down on their defense of the administration.
