Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) publicly shared a letter he received from U.S. Attorney Edward Martin, raising concerns about his critical remarks on Elon Musk. The letter, written on Department of Justice letterhead, questioned Garcia’s comments during a CNN interview and suggested they could be perceived as a threat.
“As a United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, I receive requests for information and clarification. I take these requests seriously and act on them with letters like this one you are receiving,” Martin wrote, though he did not specify who requested the inquiry.

The letter specifically referenced Garcia’s February 12, 2025, CNN interview, in which he stated, “What the American public wants is for us to bring actual weapons to this bar fight. This is an actual fight for democracy.” The remarks were made in response to a question on how Democrats could counter Musk’s influence.
Musk currently serves as a “special government employee” under President Donald Trump, working to cut government programs under the premise of eliminating “waste, fraud, and abuse,” though specific instances have not been cited, according to Rolling Stone.
Garcia’s comments drew criticism, with Martin writing, “This sounds to some like a threat to Mr. Musk—an appointed representative of President Donald Trump who you call a ‘d–k’—and government staff who work for him. Their concerns have led to this inquiry.”

He continued, “We take threats against public officials very seriously. I look forward to your cooperation with my letter of inquiry after request. Thank you in advance for your assistance. Please respond by February 24, 2025. Should you have further questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to call my office or schedule a time to meet in person.”

Garcia, undeterred, responded on Bluesky: “So if you criticize Elon Musk, Trump’s DOJ will send you this letter. Members of Congress must have the right to forcefully oppose the Trump Administration. I will not be silenced.”
The letter has sparked concerns over potential government overreach and threats to free speech, raising questions about the balance between political rhetoric and perceived threats. With the deadline for Garcia’s response looming, the controversy is likely to escalate in the coming weeks.
