Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have suffered a major reputational blow after Vanity Fair published a scathing article exposing allegations about the Duchess of Sussex’s treatment of staff. The article, released on the five-year anniversary of their royal exit, has reignited debates about the couple’s public image and standing in Hollywood.

The piece includes damning accounts from former palace employees, with one staff member describing their experience working for Meghan as “really awful” and claiming that some ex-aides required “long-term therapy” after leaving their positions.

Discussing the article on the Recollections May Vary podcast, royal expert Maureen Callahan argued that the publication’s harsh critique reflects the Sussexes’ declining influence in entertainment and media circles. “This cover story has a lot of teeth, which is something most publications no longer have,” Callahan noted while speaking with host Kinsey Schofield.

She further suggested that Vanity Fair’s decision to take such a strong stance indicates a wider shift in Hollywood’s perception of the couple. “Vanity Fair thought that they could take a wrecking ball to these two and just obliterate them,” Callahan remarked. “It tells you everything we need to know about where they stand in the industry.”

The article follows a report from The Hollywood Reporter, which suggested that Hollywood’s interest in the Duke and Duchess of Sussex has significantly waned. “Whether it’s publishing, podcasting, streaming—it followed The Hollywood Reporter story, which basically said Hollywood is done with them,” Callahan added.

Harry and Meghan’s relationship with the entertainment industry has faced increasing scrutiny, particularly after their high-profile deals with Netflix and Spotify yielded mixed results. While their Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan generated buzz, the couple’s overall media projects have struggled to maintain momentum, leading to speculation about their long-term viability in Hollywood.

Meanwhile, royal insiders see the Vanity Fair piece as further confirmation that the couple’s transition from working royals to media personalities has not gone as smoothly as anticipated. The Sussexes have not publicly responded to the article, but with media scrutiny intensifying and Hollywood seemingly distancing itself, the couple may need to reassess their next steps as they navigate life outside the royal family.
