Democratic Senator Jack Reed expressed renewed doubts about Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump’s nominee to lead the Pentagon, following a meeting that failed to allay concerns over his qualifications and past controversies.

“Today’s meeting did not relieve my concerns about Mr. Hegseth’s lack of qualifications and raised more questions than answers,” said Reed, the ranking member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, in a statement on Wednesday. “As with any nominee for this critical position, Mr. Hegseth must undergo the same high level of scrutiny as prior Secretary of Defense nominees.”

Hegseth, a Fox News weekend co-host and Trump ally has faced criticism over his limited military and leadership experience, which critics argue does not meet the demands of heading the Department of Defense. Adding to the controversy, a 2017 sexual assault allegation against Hegseth has resurfaced, raising further questions about his suitability for the role.

Despite Reed’s concerns, Hegseth appears to have enough Republican support to advance his nomination. Senate Majority Leader John Thune privately assured Trump that Hegseth likely has the votes needed for confirmation, according to a CBS News report citing three sources.

The report follows shifting dynamics among key senators. Notably, Sen. Joni Ernst, a Republican member of the Armed Services Committee and a combat veteran, softened her initial skepticism after a second meeting with Hegseth. While Ernst indicated she would “support him through this process,” she stopped short of committing to a final vote in his favor.

Hegseth’s nomination has sparked significant debate within the Senate and beyond. Supporters praise his alignment with Trump’s policy goals and his communication skills, while detractors point to his controversial tenure at the helm of veterans’ organizations and his lack of high-level defense management experience.

The confirmation process now hinges on whether Hegseth can effectively address senators’ concerns during his upcoming hearing. With key votes from swing Republicans still uncertain, his path to confirmation may depend on his ability to reassure lawmakers about his qualifications and address the allegations against him.

As the Senate Armed Services Committee prepares for a high-stakes review, Hegseth’s nomination underscores the broader tensions over Trump’s Cabinet picks and the evolving role of military leadership in his administration.
